I keep returning to that last line.

Discover that I had not lived.

Fuck.

What a thing to carry.

Not the fear of dying. The fear of reaching the end and realising you were always getting ready to start.

I’ve been having one of those days.

The kind where my own expectation sits heavy on my chest before I’ve even made coffee.

Work more. Write more. Be more.

For years I thought freedom was out there. In the next milestone. The next version of myself. The next peak to summit.

But there are always more mountains.

And the weight of that kept me ascending. Always striving. Never quite arriving.

Thoreau didn’t go to the woods to escape.

He went to front the essential facts.

To face them. To let them teach him.

And I think the essential fact is simple.

You are already alive.

Right now. In this moment. In this ordinary moment you’re treating like a waiting room.

The life you’re building toward is the one happening while you build.

I’m learning to lay it down.

Not the ambition. Not the desire to create or grow or contribute.

But the scoreboard.

The imagined opinions. The version of myself built from other people’s perception of what I should be by now.

I’m learning to notice when that inner critic isn’t serving me.

It’s just noise.

And in the quiet underneath that noise, something is already here.

Not waiting to be built. Not waiting to be earned.

Just here.

Whole.

So when I feel the pull to prove, I pause.

I feel the ground beneath me.

I take a breath.

And sit in the moment, knowing this moment is enough. I am enough. This is the life.

Not as something I’m trying to believe.

As something I’m trying to remember.

Because wholeness was never something to build.

It was something to return to.

That’s what Thoreau knew.

The woods aren’t somewhere else.

They’re wherever you finally stop and meet yourself.

Deliberately. Honestly. Here.

Not when you’re ready. Not when you’ve earned the right to rest.

Now.

Because this moment is all any of us ever actually have.

And it’s already enough.

You don’t throw the rock away once you’ve crossed.
You leave it there, knowing you can always walk back.
Visit. Remember. Honour what was built.

Because if you’ve poured yourself into something that mattered,
it doesn’t disappear when you step aside.
The clients you served,
the team you grew,
the community you helped shape,
these don’t switch off with your title.
They remain.
Alive. Breathing. Becoming their own.

A good exit holds that truth.
It doesn’t slam the door.
It doesn’t burn the bridge.
It lets you return,
not to take control,
but to witness the life that continues without you.

And like a mantra,
an exit is not meant to be permanent.
It’s a resting place between worlds.
A rhythm that carries you across.
Not somewhere you stay forever,
but a bridge that delivers you back to yourself.

To linger too long in the mantra
is to miss the silence it points toward.
To linger too long in the exit
is to miss the chapter waiting to open.

The gift of both is movement.
Forward.
Lighter.
Wiser.

And when you look back across the pond,
you’ll see it clearly,
what you built, what you loved, what still lives.
Not as a weight,
but as a reminder:
you were always more than what you made.

I still have the little bracelet I wore when I left the hospital forty two years ago.
A thin strip of plastic, stamped with my name,
a beginning small enough to fit around a newborn wrist.

Most people lose these things. I kept it.
Sometimes I wonder why.
Maybe it’s proof I was here.
Maybe it’s a reminder to ask, will any of this matter?

This wonderful, messy, wondrous life.
Will it matter to anyone but my audience of one?

I think of words in the same way.
We live in a time where they fall like rain.
Cheap, endless,
produced in volume, like store-bought bread.

Plenty to fill the shelf.
But not enough to nourish.

Meaning, though, does not vanish.
It waits for weight.
And weight comes when words rise from lived experience,
from presence,
from the kind of reflection you can’t mass produce.

It is the difference between bread in plastic wrap
and bread pulled steaming from the oven.
One fills the stomach.
The other feeds the soul.

Technology will always give us more.
More speed.
More noise.
More empty calories.

And yet, the rare thing glows brighter.
A handwritten note.
A story that lingers.
A word that arrives carrying the fingerprint of a soul.

This is what we hunger for.
Not more words.
Words that nourish.

So maybe this is the work now,
to bake slowly in an impatient world.
To leave behind not just words,
but bread worth breaking together.

I don’t know if this matters.
But it felt like breaking bread,
warm , imperfect and unfinished,
passed from my table to yours.

And so I’ll leave this crumb,
thsi one small signal amongst the noise,
to remind you it was written by me.

A river continually flows,
yet it is always here.

Always the same,
yet always new.

The river is everywhere at once,
at the source and at the mouth,
at the waterfall and in the ocean,
in the mountains and in the valleys.

For the river,
only the present flows.
Not the currents of the past.
Not the tides of the future.

When I review my life,
I see it too as a river.
Whole.

You are where you are.
You cannot be where you are not.

If you try to be where you are not,
you miss where you are,
like trying to hold water in your hand
while the river keeps flowing.

You can look back with nostalgia,
or forward with hope,
but it is always from this bank,
this moment,
this flow.

If you dwell where you are not,
you may find
you have lived your life wishing for another place,
while the river of now
is moving beneath your feet.

The only place that truly exists
is unfolding here,
like the river itself,
always moving,
always present,
always new.

And when the mind pulls you away,
remember:

The mind is the place
the soul goes to hide
from the heart.

Return instead to the river.

For the river is life.
The river is you.

Always flowing.
Always present.
Always whole.

When you sit back
in the seat of the soul,
the place of the quiet watcher,
you see the mind’s thoughts
rolling through like waves.

From here you realise:
you are the one who chooses
which waves to follow,
which to let pass.

And yet, even that choice
isn’t required.
When you rest as the watcher,
you see you don’t need a preference at all.

You can let the ocean move
without dividing it
into right or wrong,
fear or love.

And in that surrender,
something simple opens:

When you have no preference,
you cannot be offended.

When you have no preference,
you cannot be disappointed.

When you have no preference,
you already have all you need.

Because the work is no longer
to shape the world outside you,
but to soften the one within.

This is the quiet watcher’s gift.
Not escape.
Not indifference.
Just the still freedom
of one who remembers
they are the sky,
and not the weather passing through.

Then, on an ordinary beach in Western Australia, everything shifted.
I was cracked open to something undeniable, something within.
That moment began the slow remembering that would become this book.

I didn’t set out to write a book.
I was just trying to make sense of myself,
to put words around the ache I couldn’t outrun.
Over time, those scattered notes became chapters,
and those chapters became Beyond the Noise - Audience of One

It is part memoir, part meditation.
It traces the ache behind ambition, the masks we wear,
and the moments that quietly call us home.

This is not a book of answers.
It is a story of losing the thread and finding it again.
Of presence breaking through noise.
Of learning that wholeness isn’t something we build,
it’s something we remember, something we return to.

I’ve been writing this book for years.
Through the noise of growth.
Through success that rang hollow.
Through silence that began to breathe again.

It is my story, but it is also an invitation to yours.
To pause. To breathe.
To remember your own Audience of One.

The book is still finding its way.

A book is a seed.
It may bloom the moment its read/written.
It may lie dormant for years.
It may never bloom.
But still
The planting matters.

And they’ll be here long after we’re gone.

They hold the threads of culture.
Tradition.
Identity.

From cave walls to campfires.
From books to film.

Stories have always been mirrors.
Reflecting fears.
Hopes.
Dreams.

They help us make sense of where we’ve been.
They show us where we stand now.
They let us imagine what could be next.

I don’t know if there’s a formula to telling them well.
But when I look back, I see patterns.

It usually starts with knowing who I’m speaking to.
Sometimes it’s just a handful of people.
Sometimes it feels like a tribe.
Sometimes it’s the whole world.
And sometimes… it’s only a future version of me,
trying to send back a note.

What makes a story land isn’t complicated.
It’s purpose that feels clear.
Characters that feel alive.
Moments that carry emotion you can’t fake.
Images that stick.
Themes that matter.
And enough honesty that the feedback humbles you.

Nike understood this early.

They didn’t just know their runners’ shoe size.
They knew how they ran.
Where they ran.
What they were chasing.

It was never just about selling shoes.
It was about building trust.
Giving their people a genuine edge.

That reminds me of something I’ve come to call the Alfred principle.

Your customer is Batman.
Not you.

They don’t want Robin.
They want to be the hero.

So you show up like Alfred.
Not centre stage, but always there.
Trusted.
Handing them the belt, the suit, the tools, the car.
Everything they need to rise.

Nike gave its runners the edge.
Apple gave its rebels the tools.

Always in service of something bigger.

Because every Batman needs an Alfred.
Every hero needs a guide.

And without a villain…
there’s no story worth telling.

So if you need a villain

and the version of yourself built from that perception.

And in that release,
I found freedom.

Not a bigger life.
Not more meaning.
A deeper arrival.

Here.
Now.
Enough.

Wholeness was never something to build.
It was something to remember.
Something to surrender to.

So if you feel the pull to prove your life matters,
know that it does.

Pause.
Breathe.
Notice the ground beneath you.
Say quietly:

This moment is enough.
